Literature Text

You parked in the back row of the movie drive in exhausted from a long day of school, but eager for the movie playing. You were a freshman at your new school and were very quiet. You lived right on the outskirts of where the 'greasers' typically lived and hung out. There were always many fights with them and the 'soc's', but to be honest, you never really cared who was who or why. It seemed a bit silly to single people out because they lived on a side of town. You snapped out of your thoughts as the movie screen lit up, and bounced in your seat. The film was 'Night of the Living Dead', a horror film you had been excited to see for a while. Though the movie was a little cheesy, you supposed it wasn't that bad, considering it at least had a plot, unlike those boring beach movies. The movie was going great, until you heard a ruckus going on in the front row. Some jack wagon was blowing the horn and screaming and hollering at some boys seated in the front row. "Hey!" You called, rolling down your window and sticking your head out. "I can't hear the movie, so shut your damn trap!" It went silent, but you were irritated when you noticed the car was backing up near yours. A sting ray.. You sighed and rolled your eyes as those who were known as the 'popular kids' or the 'soc's' parked next to you and rolled their windows down. "Hey, you the one who told us to shut up? Huh?" They looked at each other laughing. "That's right. I payed money to see this film and I can't hear it over all of you acting like jackasses in the front row." They laughed a little more, the one at the window, raising an eyebrow at you. "Oh? We paid too. Not our fault that the greasers showed up too." "Yeah, and who do you think yer talking to? You look like one yerself with that rusty pickup you got there." Glaring you replied, "I make fine money. Trucks are safer and tough in my definition. I don't label myself as anything. I ain't a greaser, and I'm sure as hell not one of you." "Feisty, feisty huh?? Hey, what's your name baby? I'm Mark." You narrowed your eyes, getting angry that you were missing the movie. "I didn't ask for your name, wise ass, and mine is none of YOUR business. Buzz off." You angrily started to roll up your window, when 'Mark' slapped his hand on the door handle. "Get off my car!" You shouted, but he didn't listen and instead got out and opened your car door. "I'm warning you", you practically growled, reaching for the blade you kept in the seat fold. "Stop." A voice rang out, catching you off guard. The soc and you both looked over to where the firm, but young voice had come from to see a boy in a purple, short sleeved tight shirt. You studied him up and down in a slight panic from the current situation, while Mark did the same, in disgust. "What do you want greaser?" You looked back and fourth from the both of them, realizing who they had been messing with in the front row. "I want you to leave her alone. You've been bugging everyone all night." They went silent and glared at each other, tension thick in the air. You'd seen the greaser boy from somewhere.. at school in the hallway. "There a problem here punks?" A white haired, rough looking guy, also appearing to be a greaser asked walking up. You knew this boy! He was a hood and hung out with the shepard gang from time to time! The notorious trouble maker- "Dallas fucking Winston..." You mumbled only loud enough for he, himself to hear. He smirked at you, causing you to get a little flushed and sort of angry, then looked back to the boys. "Hey, boys I got a blade in my back pocket. It's perfect for slashing tires and necks you know.. So which is it gonna be?"  Mark looked hesitantly to his friends, who stayed in the car. They knew their were only three of them and if the two greasers jumped in, you would too and one of them had a blade... "Let's book it boys.. get in the car." Dallas laughed as they drove off, and the other boy walked up to you. "Hey, you okay? They didn't mess with you too bad huh?" You smiled slightly, "No, no. I'm fine." 'He's sweet..' you thought to yourself, your once panicked and angry features softening up. "Hey.." Dallas said, looking you up and down, "How old are you?" You raised an eyebrow. "Fifteen. Why?" "Aint you a little young to be driving around?" Shit. You'd barrowed your dad's truck, in hopes that no cops would pull you over, but you were a good driver. You'd learned at thirteen. "Ain't you a little old to be walking around?" You shot back. Dallas laughed, lighting a cigarette. "Fair enough. You're alright, girl."  "Don't you go to my school?" The boy standing in front of you asked. "Yeah. I've seen you in the hallways. I'm _________." "Well, I'm Ponyboy.. and this is my friend Dally." He looked to you like he was expecting something, but you only smiled. "Cool name man." You suddenly turned and groaned as you saw the credits of the movie rolling up. "Awwe noo! I missed it! Damn!" You folded your arms disappointed and sighed. "Well, I can't thank yall enough for helping me out with those thugs. Need a ride home?" Pony looked to Dallas and he shrugged, walking around and getting in the backseat. "Sure, but I'm getting dropped off at Buck's for a party. It's gonna be crazy." Pony got in on the passengers side across from you. "I just gotta be back by eleven." You nodded and revved up the engine, pulling out of the driveway.

You had had fun talking with Dally and Ponyboy on the ride home. Dallas had flirted with you a bit, but you told him to step off before you knifed him, and he said he didn't like kids anyway. You however did get a "You dig alright with me lil gal." Before he got out to go to his party. You spent the rest of the drive talking with Pony about school and sports. "Yeah I've been thinking about trying out for the track team next semester." you smiled, pulling down his street. "That'd be cool, then we could hang out more often." He smiled. You liked him, he seemed like a really deep and sweet kid. You thought Dallas was cute, but he wasn't as.. open minded and thoughtful as him. As you pulled up at his house, Pony looked away a little. "Thanks for the ride ________." He said, stepping out of the car. "Not a problem. Thank you for standing up for me sweetie." He blushed a little at your nickname. "So.. I'll see you around school?" You thought, then smirked and nodded. "Sure thing." You started to peel off again, but he ran to the window and stopped you "Wait-! Wait!" You slammed your foot on the break and he tripped a little, rubbing his head akwardly. "Would you.. like to hang out next weekend too, maybe..?" Flattered, you smiled warmly. "Yes. That sounds great." Pony smiled, excitement in his eyes. "Alright! Saturday, at the malt shop!" You nodded and pulled away, laughing as you saw him excitedly do a flip onto his front porch. "What a cutie."
